Kannapolis police are seeking a second suspect in the attempted armed robbery of a Subway restaurant July 14.

Within hours of the Monday afternoon attempted robbery, officers arrested Larry James Hancock, 16, of 1625 Oakcrest Drive.

He remains in the Cabarrus County Jail under $50,000 bond, charged with attempted robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Two men entered the Subway at 2221 Roxie St. at 3:26 p.m. Monday. They sat at a table briefly and then left, according to Detective Sgt. Chris Nesbitt.

A few minutes later, one of the men returned to the restaurant, produced a firearm and demanded money.

According to an officer’s report, the employee stepped away from the counter, and the gunman left the business without getting any money, Nesbitt said. The report was not clear about what prompted the robber to leave suddenly.

Kannapolis patrol officers got descriptions of the men and immediately began canvassing the area.

The store employee told officers both men appeared to be teenagers. The employee described one of the men as African-American, tall, thin and wearing a white T-shirt. The second man also was black but short and heavy set, wearing a gray sleeveless shirt.

During their search, officers located and arrested Hancock. Officer Roberto Tito Rodriguez was the investigating officer.

Nesbitt said officers are still looking for the second man.

Police ask anyone with information about the attempted robbery to call the Police Department at 704-920-4000 or Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers at 704-93-Crime (932-7463).

CHINA GROVE — Robbers wearing ski masks and carrying a black gym bag  cleaned out the safe at  Porky’s Bar-B-Que restaurant early Monday.

The two men entered the  restaurant located at 1309  North Main St. around 1:10 a.m., opened a locked safe and carried off the gym bag full of cash.

“They were prepared, they apparently knew  where to go and what was there,” Police Chief Hodge Coffield said Monday afternoon. He noted that Porky’s was very busy over the weekend with the huge turnout for Farmers Day.

Porky’s closed around 9  p.m. Sunday.

James David Johnson, an employee of restaurant owner, Mike Reid, was in the building cleaning.

According to police,  Johnson had left the back door open.

Coffield said the masked men entered and told Johnson to  “stay calm and nobody will get hurt.”

One of the men watched  Johnson while the other went to the office and opened the safe,  which has a combination lock.

Once the safe was cleaned out, they taped Johnson to a kitchen sink.

He was able to get free within minutes and call 911.

The men were in and out of the restaurant in less than 10 minutes.

Neither of the men displayed a gun or other weapon.

Coffield said they have a possible suspect.

And police are work to determine if the video surveillance system has a usable picture.

Coffield asked anyone with information to contact police at 704-857-7755.

Both men are described as being white and in their mid-20s.

One, who was dressed in camouflage clothing, was described as around 5 feet 7 inches tall weighing approximately 200 pounds.

The second man, who was dressed completely in black,  is described as 6 feet 2 inches tall weighing 160 to 170 pounds.

CHINA GROVE — A police chase involving two sport bikes reached speeds of more than 100 mph, ending when the police car went out of control and struck a tree and a parked car in Cabarrus County.

The officer was not injured, and both bikers fled.

Around 3 a.m. Sunday, China Grove Officer J.S. Washam clocked two bikers on N.C. 152 west traveling in excess of 100 mph.

When Washam attempted to stop them, they changed direction and headed east toward town on Stirewalt Road and Patterson Street.

The bikers turned on to Kimball Road, with one stopping at the intersection of Kimball Road and South Main Street.

Police Chief Hodge Coffield said Washam stopped and as he approached, the biker took off.

Washam began pursuit of the biker going north on South Main Street, on to Eudy Road, Chapel Street, Bostian Road , Daugherty Road, Lentz Road and then onto Old Concord Road, Old Beatty Ford Road, Phaniels Church Road, going into Cabarrus County and onto Sapp Road.

Coffield said at one point  the biker was going in excess of 120 mph.

In the 6200 block of Sapp Road, Washam lost control of the 2008 Ford Crown Victoria, with the rear sliding around and striking a tree. The car continued on and struck a 1997 Honda Accord owned by Kenneth McCoy Powers, which was parked at his residence at 6201 Sapp Road, Rockwell.

Coffield said the N.C. Highway Patrol estimated  Washam’s speed at 65 to 70 mph at the time of the accident. Washam said he never exceeded 70 mph during the chase.

Trooper D.J. Eggers of the N.C. Highway Patrol investigated the accident.

According to 911 records the chase lasted eight minutes.

No other police units were involved in the chase, but Landis and Rockwell officers responded to the accident scene.

Coffield said Washam remains sore from the accident but has returned to duty and worked a partial shift.

Police have no description of the bikers.

Mount Pleasant woman guilty of e-mail theft

July 22, 2008

A Mount Pleasant woman has pleaded guilty to stealing e-mail from a company after she was fired and using the information against her former employer.

According to the office of U.S. Attorney Anna Mills Wagoner, Teresa Gamble Treadaway, 49, pleaded guilty in federal court in Greensboro to one count each of wire fraud, computer fraud and unlawful access to stored communication for commercial advantage.

Treadaway faces up to 20 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, and a federal judge can order her to make restitution to her former company ECOFLO.

Based in Greensboro, ECOFLO provides industrial and waste managment services. According to Wagoner’s office, Treadaway began monitoring e-mail of her former co-workers and company officials shortly after she was fired from her sales job in October 2003.

“She was able to do this by the Internet because she knew that ECOFLO did not require its employees to change” the generic password assigned to them by the company computer system, federal prosecutors said.

She monitored ECOFLO e-mail through 2004 and 2005, even after she went to work for a competing company.

In June 2005, federal prosecutors say, Treadaway intercepted an ECOFLO bid to remove chemical waste from the tanks of a company in Columbia, S.C., and, using that information, was able to submit the winning bid for that work for her company.

When FBI agents executed a search warrant at her Mount Pleasant home in May 2006, they found the ECOFLO bid documents and other company e-mail.

A judge is scheduled to sentence Treadaway Nov. 18 in Greensboro. Treadaway does not have a publicly listed phone number and could not be reached for comment.
