Kannapolis Citizen
As the Kannapolis Intimidators have struggled on the field this season, the team has seen its roster undergo almost weekly shakeups.
But last week, the Intimidators underwent another shakeup last week — this one with its coaching staff.
The Chicago White Sox relieved Kannapolis manager Chris Jones of his duties on July 28, just before the start of the Intimidators' doubleheader in Lakewood (N.J.)
He has been replaced for the rest of the Kannapolis’ South Atlantic League schedule by former I’s manager Nick Capra, the White Sox’s assistant director of minor league instruction.
“I’m excited,” Capra said. “It’s going to be nice to work with these players one-on-one for the rest of the season.”
•
Capra, who has spent 13 years in the White Sox minor league organization, managed the Intimidators to the South Atlantic League title in 2005, his only year with the team.
The Denver, Colo., native, spent most of his playing career in the minor leagues, batting .274 with 92 home runs and 652 RBI in 1,888 games. He also played 45 major-league games with Texas and Kansas City, hitting .167 (9-of-54).
After retiring as a player, Capra began his minor-league coaching career with Bristol (Tenn.), the White Sox’s advanced rookie team in the Appalachian League. In three seasons there (1996-1998), he led the Sox from a ninth-place finish in 1996 to a league-leading 42-24 record in 1998, earning manager of the year honors.
Capra was promoted to Burlington (Iowa) of the A-level Midwest League in 1999, racking up a 71-68 record and a league championship — his first as a minor-league manager.
Capra then spent two years (2000-2001) as manager at Birmingham (Ala.) in the Double-A Southern League, advancing to the league playoffs both seasons, then spent three years managing the ChiSox’s Triple-A International League team in Charlotte.
After his stint with Kannapolis, Capra was made the White Sox minor-league organization’s hitting coordinator in 2006, then added the assistant director of minor league instruction title this season.
•
Jones, who was named the Intimidators manager prior to the start of the 2007 season, played for 11 different organizations — including eight major league teams — in his career, which ended with the Newark (N.J.) Bears of the independent Atlantic League after the 2004 season.
Jones then stepped into coaching, with Newark naming him the club's manager prior to the start of the 2005 season. He spent two years with the Bears, then signed with the White Sox to manage the Intimidators prior to the 2007 season.
