Kannapolis couple charged in severe beating of infant

August 19, 2008

By Jessie Burchette news@kannapoliscitizen.com The parents of an infant who suffered severe head trauma have been charged with felony child abuse. Police said the infant may have suffered debilitating head injuries in the June 30 incident. Kannapolis Police have charged David Burns Coley, 28, and April Michelle King, 24, both of 1110 Klondale Ave. with felony child abuse inflicting serious injury.  Klondale Avenue is on the east side of the city, running between Bethpage Road and Rogers Lake roads. Coley is also charged with felony assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury. The child was 2 months old when it was rushed to Carolinas Medical Center NorthEast on June 30. The parents told medical personnel that they had dropped the child. Capt. Chuck Adams said medical personnel said some of the injuries on the child had occurred previously and had begun to heal. Adams said the child was not injured from a fall but sustained blunt trauma to the head. The infant was in the hospital for several weeks before being placed with a foster family. “The child is doing better,” said Adams, “We don’t know if  the head injury will be debilitating long term.” Police got the initial call from Cabarrus EMS personnel regarding the injuries, and later from the hospital. Adams said the criminal investigation unit worked on the case for weeks and consulted with the the Cabarrus District Attorney before filing the charges. Coley and King have no other children. Adams declined to specify how police believe the  injuries were  inflicted. He said the charge of assault with a deadly weapon relates to the physical size of Coley in relation to the child. Coley posted a $25,000 bond. He was scheduled to appear in Cabarrus District Court Monday. King posted a $2,000 bond and was also scheduled to appear in court Monday. Police have opened a new child abuse investigation  non-related to Coley and King. A 2-year-old child was treated at CMC-NorthEast for cigarette burns and bruises. Police began the investigation Sunday.  A police log entry identified a 19-year-old man as a suspect.

Crime news - man taking pictures of children draws attention

August 19, 2008

By Frank DeLoache news@kannapoliscitizen.com A man taking pictures of children playing in the splash pad in the city of Kannapolis’ Village Park drew the concern of people at the neighboring YMCA and library. So much so that they called Kannapolis police about 4 p.m. Aug. 11, a Monday. Officers found the man taking pictures on a bench at the library, according to Kannapolis Police Capt. Chuck Adams. But after talking to him, they concluded he wasn’t breaking the law and had a constitutional right to be there, Adams said. The 59-year-old Kannapolis man has no criminal record or outstanding warrants against him, Wayne said, and he told officers he was not taking “sexually oriented” pictures. The man told officers “he was free to sit in a public place,” Adams said. Police documented the incident in a police report, so they would have a record, Adams said.   Arrests • William Roseman, 27, 714 Murphy St.; probation violation; $3,000 bond; 10:31 a.m. Aug. 10. • Mark Dancy, 46, 305 E. 16th St.; possession of drug paraphernalia; $750 bond; 10:41 p.m. Aug. 11. • Charles W. Police still have questions in identity theft case

August 19, 2008

By Frank DeLoache news@kannapoliscitizen.com KANNAPOLIS — A moment of forgetfulness has cost a 50-year-old man his freedom and has police officers wondering if they know his real name. Kannapolis police say a middle-aged man used a copy machine at an office supply store Thursday but left some papers in the copier when he left the store. Employees found a picture of the man placed over another person’s picture on a Massachusetts driver’s license, according to Detective Sgt. Chris Nesbitt. The employees called the Police Department, but they didn’t know the man’s name. Officers asked store officials to call if the man returned for his papers, and, sure enough, he did. When officers arrived, the man cooperated with them, allowing them to search his car where they found a number of other documents and IDs, Nesbitt said Friday. The man told officers his name was Joshua Eli Cinner, and he even had a birth certificate and other identifying documents with Cinner’s name on them. But when officers searched computer records, they determined that Cinner is a white male, while their suspect was black, Nesbitt said. They also didn’t know how the unidentified man had gotten the Massachusetts driver’s license of another man as well as financial cards and documents indicating he had visited or done business in at least three other states — Massachusetts, Florida and New Jersey — and the District of Columbia. Finally, an officer noticed among the man’s papers a money order made out to Don Steven Wright with a Massachusetts address. The officers began calling law enforcement agencies in Massachusetts and tracing financial transactions on the IDs the man had. Finally, Nesbitt said, an officer in Amherst, Mass. — not the Massachusetts address on the money order — sent investigators a picture that matched their suspect. And investigators have charged Wright, 50, 1694 Mission Oaks St., Kannapolis, with identity theft and manufacture or possession of counterfeit identification. A magistrate set Wright’s bond at $100,000, partly because “we’re still not sure he’s who he says he is,” according to Police Capt. Wayne Adams. Wright told officers he works in construction and has lived in Kannapolis about six months because he has relatives here. But Nesbitt said last Friday that officers are still trying to confirm that information and reach all the people whose identification was found in Wright’s car. Police officials in Massachusetts said they do not have any warrants against Wright, and Kannapolis officials have not found any other outstanding warrants against the other IDs Wright was carrying. Patrol Officer Roberto Rodriguez is the lead investigator in the case, Nesbitt said. “The only thing we can do is contact the additional names to see if they have been victims of residential or vehicle break-ins” and to review their financial records for any purchases or other transactions they didn’t make, Nesbitt said. Anyone with information about Wright or the case should call Cabarrus Area Crime Stoppers at 704-93CRIME (932-7463) or the Police Department at 704-920-4000.

Man still in fair condition about falling 30 feet from bucket

August 19, 2008

Staff report KANNAPOLIS — A 30-year-old man remained in fair condition in a Charlotte hospital Tuesday, five days after falling nearly 30 feet from a tree. A Kannapolis Police Department incident log identified the man as Brian Baker but did not provide an address for Baker. A spokeswoman at Carolinas Medical Center-Charlotte said Baker remained in fair condition Tuesday. The Kannapolis Fire Department responded to a medical call at 5813 McClenny Drive about 12:30 p.m. Aug. 14, last Thursday. According to a Fire Department press release, Baker fell out of a bucket truck while trimming trees. Firefighters responded with three vehicles and seven personnel. Odell Fire Department also assisted. A helicopter flew Baker to the Charlotte hospital.

Firefighters save three pets from smoldering blaze

August 19, 2008

Staff report KANNAPOLIS — A malfunctioning vacuum cleaner caused smoke and fire damage to a home on Glenwood Street last Thursday afternoon. A residential fire alarm prompted the dispatch of the Kannapolis Fire Department at 2:38 p m. to a single-story brick house at 2364 Glenwood St., between Lane Street and Moose Road, just inside the Rowan County line. Firefighters saw no signs of fire outside the house, but crews found heavy, black smoke inside. They put out the fire and searched the home for occupants. No one was found, but crews freed three family pets.  The homeowner, Richard Berry, was at work, according to Randall Faggart, division chief. He said Berry’s wife had left home and returned minutes after the fire department arrived. Faggart said investigators determined a faulty electrical cord on a vacuum cleaner was the source of the fire. The vacuum was cut off but remained plugged in.  Firefighters from Kannapolis Stations 1, 2 and 3 responded, with 10 pieces of equipment and 21 firefighters.  Enochville and Landis fire departments moved up to Kannapolis stations to provide coverage. A fire department official cited the value of residential alarms.  “It is a rare occurrence that we respond to an alarm that turns out to be an actual incident. That is why we always act as if every call is a true emergency,” said Battalion Chief Tracy Winecoff.   After the fire was extinguished, investigators allowed homeowners back into the residence to assess the damage. Once inside, the Berrys thanked firefighters for acting so quickly and saving many of the family’s valuables. The residence suffered moderate fire and smoke damage, and the family will be staying with friends.

Fire Department raises $23,586.74 for MDA

August 19, 2008

KANNAPOLIS — The Kannapolis Fire Department raised $23,586.74 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association over the last three weeks, a city press release said. The Fire Department held its annual “Fill the Boot” drive at two locations — near Wal-Mart and Super Target — in Kannapolis on July 26, Aug. 1-2 and Aug. 9. The fundraising effort eclipsed last year’s total of $15,419.64. “I would like to thank all the citizens of Kannapolis and Cabarrus County — as well as visitors — who contributed to the Fill the Boot campaign,” Kannapolis Fire Chief Ernie Hiers said. “I’m proud to serve such a vibrant and caring community and help raise funds for such an important cause.” Assistant City Manager Eddie Smith called the community’s outpouring of support “generous and exciting.” “I am glad that a city department is able to continuously partner with such a worthwhile cause and give back locally,” Smith said. Funds raised by the firefighters enable the Muscular Dystrophy Association to continue providing direct services to local children and adults with neuromuscular diseases. In addition to a worldwide research program, MDA provides assistance with the purchase of wheelchairs and leg braces and offers a summer camp program for children ages 6 to 21 with muscular dystrophy.  Free medical services are also available at the MDA ALS/Neuromuscular Clinic located at Carolinas Medical Center for individuals diagnosed with any of the 43 diseases covered by MDA. “The support of the Kannapolis community for the MDA is incredible,” said Amy Nicotera, program director for the MDA-Charlotte North office. “We named them our fire department of the year for the Southern Piedmont last year for their excellent work in fundraising, and this year they easily surpassed the already high mark set in 2007.” For more information on the Muscular Dystrophy Association, log on to www.mda.org.

Pictures lead to arrest in Wal-Mart assault

August 19, 2008

By Steve Huffman news@kannapoliscitizen.com CONCORD — Police say the media contributed to last Friday’s arrest of a man charged with sexually assaulting a juvenile in a Wal-Mart restroom. Dennis Erik William Becker, 41, of 387 Cameron Drive, Concord, is being held under a $1 million bond. He’s charged with first-degree statutory sexual offense and second-degree kidnapping. “It’s a serious offense,” said Deputy Chief Guy Smith of the Concord Police Department. “We want people to know this man is off the streets, he’s not a threat to anyone else.” Smith said Concord police received numerous calls Friday after pictures of the suspect were released from Wal-Mart surveillance cameras. The pictures ran in several local newspapers and video aired on local TV stations. Smith said a man who accompanied Becker into Wal-Mart was first identified by a caller. When that man was contacted, Smith said, he gave information that led officers to Becker. “Without getting that video and the photograph out there, we wouldn’t be where we’re at tonight,” Smith said Friday evening. He said Becker cooperated with police, though he declined to say if he admitted to the offenses. Smith said the victim’s father was “pleased with the sequence of events. “He’s glad we’ve made an arrest,” Smith said. Police say the assault happened about 7:15 p.m. Aug. 10, a Sunday, at Wal-Mart at 2420 Supercenter Drive.  A boy was in a bathroom stall when a man crawled under the door and made inappropriate contact with him. The child was not physically injured, police said. Surveillance system photos depicted two white men arriving at the store in a purple Honda Odyssey van. The suspect was wearing a black ball cap with a Celtic cross emblem on its front. He was also wearing a burgundy polo-style shirt, black dress pants and tan-colored shoes. The other man — who police don’t believe was involved in the assault — was wearing a flowered shirt. After entering the store, the suspect went to the restroom while the other man went shopping. Smith said Becker has been arrested several times before but never for anything as serious as Friday’s arrest. He said Becker’s previous arrests were for misdemeanor crimes or driving offenses.

Police: Concord man tired to arrange sex with girl, 14

August 19, 2008

CONCORD — Cabarrus sheriff’s investigators have accused a 51-year-old Concord man of trying to make arrangements to have sex with a 14-year-old girl. Detectives arrested Danny Wrenn Cochran, of 4800 Robert Road, at 3:10 p.m. Tuesday after he arrived at Terrymore Apartments in Concord “with the intent to have sexual relations with a 14-year-old female,” a press release said. At the time of Cochran’s arrest, detectives found “various items used for sex” in his possession, according to the press release. The press release from the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office does not indicate how investigators began investigating Cochran, but the investigation started about two weeks before Tuesday’s arrest. Cochran remains in the Cabarrus County Jail this morning under $25,000 bond. He is charged with solicitation to commit a felony act of statutory sexual offense against a 13-, 14- or 15-year-old and solicitation to commit a felony act of indecent liberties with a minor. He is scheduled to make an initial court appearance at 9 a.m. Thursday.
