No immediate charges in fatal shooting of ‘father figure’

September 23, 2008

The man who told police he accidentally shot and killed his friend Wednesday won’t face criminal charges — at least not until the state reviews evidence from the scene.

Johnny Ray Canupp Jr., 20, told Kannapolis police investigators he was holding a small-caliber handgun when the weapon discharged, Lt. Ken Jackson said.

The bullet struck and killed Larry Clyde Adams Sr., 67, around 6 p.m. Wednesday. The incident happened behind Adams’ house at 204 W. 21st St.

Police talked to the Rowan County District Attorney’s office Wednesday, Jackson said. From that conversation, he said, investigators decided to delay any possible charges until the State Bureau of Investigation reviews the evidence.

“We’re going to send the weapon off to be analyzed,” Jackson said.

Analysts will test gunshot residue and attempt to determine if the gun was functioning properly at the time of the incident, he said. Jackson hopes the results will be ready in a couple of weeks.

Johnny Canupp was at Adams’ house with his brother, David, at the time of the incident. They and another brother are triplets, according to police.

Adams had befriended the young men and served as a father figure to them, his family said Wednesday night. The triplets sometimes did odd jobs, like fixing cars or painting, for Adams and his wife, Anita.

Jackson said police think Johnny Canupp had bought the gun off the street.

“He’d had the weapon for several days,” Jackson said.

Johnny Canupp is old enough to possess a handgun, but the law says a person must be at least 21 to purchase one, Jackson said.

“He should not have had possession of the weapon, but — it happens,” Jackson said.

“There may be some weapons violations that come out of this,” he continued.

Adams had three children and 13 grandchildren. He had retired from a Charlotte trucking company.

Village Jewelry reopens in temporary home today

September 23, 2008

Village Jewelry, whose store sustained extensive smoke and heat damage in a fire last week, will reopen for business today in a temporary location at 847 Cloverleaf Plaza, just a few doors away from the main store.

The temporary location is next to the Wing Zone. Village Jewelry will maintain regular store hours of 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday-Friday and 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturdays.

Customers can take their repairs to the temporary location. The store that suffered damage in the fire will reopen in an estimated four to six weeks.

Mike Gibbs, co-owner of Village Jewelry in Cloverleaf Plaza, credits the store’s security system and a quick response from Kannapolis police and fire departments for saving the business from a fire that broke out on Sept. 17.

Still, the heavy smoke damage and heat forced Village Jewelry to close and seek temporary quarters.

A silver lining to the fire was that all of the store’s valuables were in a safe and not damaged. And all items being repaired and anything else that belonged to customers is fine, Gibbs reported.

The biggest concern for Gibbs and co-owner Lou Fennell has been the inconvenience to customers, many of whom probably haven’t heard about the fire.

“We will have to gut our store,” Gibbs said, describing its condition as “very sooty.”

The fire was called in about 12:40 a.m.

“Upon entry we encountered heavy smoke and heat,” Capt. Jerry Morgan of the Kannapolis Fire Department said.

Kannapolis responded with multiple units. Concord, Landis and Odell fire departments assisted, as well as Cabarrus County EMS. China Grove Fire Department, Cold Water Fire Department and Enochville Fire & Rescue provided district coverage.

“The fire damage was confined to the building of origin,” Division Chief Randall Faggart said.

The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical malfunction at a computer in the showroom area.

Gibbs said the store’s alarm service called in a general alarm, which prompted Kannapolis Police Officer Travis Furr to investigate.

Furr responded quickly to Cloverleaf Plaza from the middle of town, Gibbs said. Getting out of his patrol car, Furr noticed smoke and felt the fire’s heat through the front door. He called the Fire Department.

From their surveillance tapes, Gibbs said, the store owners later determined that from the first report of something amiss until firefighters arrived took 17 minutes.

“Their quick response saved us a lot,’’ he said of the fire and police departments.

The store covers roughly 2,500 square feet. Village Jewelry has been in business 23 years and employs about 10 people.

Gibbs also stressed the store’s defenses aren’t down. The insurance company is providing 24-hour security, and security alarm representatives already have begun running new wire.
