A Charlotte man who led authorities on a chase on Interstate 85, driving with his hands handcuffed behind his back, is resting in the Cabarrus County Jail under $50,000 bond.
Police have identified the man as Ricky Allen Giles, 33, last known address 3130 Sharon Amity Road, who was already on probation for a felony larceny conviction in Mecklenburg County, according to the N.C. Department of Correction Web site.
He had barely begun serving 30 months of probation, having been sentenced in January.
Now he faces seven charges connected with the Friday morning incident and possibly revocation of his probation.
The new charges include: possession of stolen goods, assault with a deadly weapon (a car) on a government official, fleeing and eluding in a motor vehicle, hit and run/failure to stop for property damage, shoplifting, no operator’s license and resisting a police officer.
According to the Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office Web site, Giles has a habit of collecting bunches of charges at once. According to the Cabarrus agency, Giles:
• Was arrested Sept. 18, 2006 on charges of possession of stolen goods, resisting an officer, assault on a government official and second-degree trespass. He was sentenced to time served and released on Nov. 14, 2006.
• On March 21, 2007, he was charged in Concord with second-degree trespass, two counts of misdemeanor larceny, simple assault and a warrant from Mecklenburg County.
Records say he was transferred to Mecklenbug County, where all those charges were handled.
The latest incident occurred about 10:25 Friday morning, when Kannapolis officers responded to a shoplifting and fight in progress at the Super Target at 6150 Bayfield Parkway.
Giles was fighting with a Target loss prevention officer, said Kannapolis Police Chief Woody Chavis.
During the arrest, Giles, hands handcuffed behind his back, ran from the officers and was able to get into a vehicle he was using. Chavis confirmed the car had been stolen from Charlotte.
The suspect twice rammed a marked Kannapolis police vehicle, disabling it. The officer was responding to the call for assistance from the first officer. An officer who was in the car was not injured.
“He rammed the car and backed up and rammed the car again,” Chavis said.
No official estimation has been confirmed, but Chavis suspects the damage of the patrol vehicle to be around $3,000.
The suspect then drove  south on I-85. Another Kannapolis Police officer chased Giles, who finally wrecked the stolen car on Interstate 77 in Charlotte.
The N.C. Highway Patrol arrested him.
“He lost control and ran into a retaining wall at I-77 and Brookshire Freeway,” Chavis said.
Concord Police and troopers with the N.C. Highway Patrol were also involved in the chase.
Chavis said the Highway Patrol took over the chase once it reached Mecklenburg County.
Giles was taken to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte, where he was treated for injuries sustained in the crash.
