Thieves still favor copper wire, catalytic converters, mo-peds

It’s impossible to know whether the soured economy and tight job market motivates thieves.

Nonetheless, you can’t help but wonder as businesses and homeowners continue to report theft of copper wire and catalytic converters.

And people seem to be stealing more mo-peds than vehicles. Who can afford the gas?

Examples in this week’s incident reports to the Kannapolis Police Department are:

• On Aug. 22, Tessa Macrae, 28, reported the catalytic converter removed from her vehicle in Kannapolis.

• At 9:56 a.m. Aug. 25, Premier Construction reported copper wire stolen from an unfinished house at an unspecified address.

• At 9:55 a.m. Aug. 26, Joseph Council, 45, reported the catalytic converter cut off his vehicle.

The Cabarrus County Sheriff’s Office log included:

• At 1:45 p.m. Aug. 27, Watson Sartain, 56, reported a mo-ped taken from his property.

• At 10:15 a.m. Aug. 28, Orleans Home Builders reported someone stole copper wiring from a house under construction at an unspecified address.

• On Aug. 29, Rick Shell, of Orleans Homebuilders, reported $600 in copper wire stolen from a home under construction at 7218 Streamhaven Drive, Harrisburg. Deputy Fetzer. 

• On Aug. 25, Holly Schikowski, 32, 2539 N.C. 73, Concord, reported the theft of her child’s $3,000 Suzuki motorcycle from her home. Deputy Thomas.

The Rowan County Sheriff’s Office listed these:

• Terry Parham of China Grove, reported someone cut copper wiring from a house he owns at 1814 W. C St., Kannapolis, between Aug. 12 and 23. Total loss was $1,150.

• Sam L. Miller of Mooresville reported catalytic converters were removed from two Miller Carpet vehicles parked at the 1509 W. C St., Kannapolis, business between Aug. 22 and 25. Total loss was $400.

• Logan Alan Arnone of Kannapolis reported a $1,400 scooter stolen Aug. 26 from a convenience store at 2023 W. C St., Kannapolis.

• Catalytic converters were stolen off four company vehicles parked at Contaminant Control, 230 Lockhart Road, Kannapolis, the night of Aug. 25.

• Andrew Pittmon, 19, and Kevin Dell Pittmon, 22, both of 1601 Valwood St.; both charged with larceny from a person, breaking and entering, vandalism (allegedly for kicking in a door at Donna Cobale’s home); written promise to appear in court; Aug. 23 and 24.

• De Carlos Quantel Robinson, 29, 1114 Mason St.; failure to stop at stop sign or light, fleeing to elude arrest, resisting an officer, possession of marijuana, possession with intent to sell and deliver marijuana, expired registration; $50,000 bond; Aug. 23.

• Charles Armstrong, 38, 1105 E. 11th St.; driving while impaired (.19 blood-alcohol test) and with revoked license; 2 a.m. Aug. 25.

Nine days earlier, Amici was charged with communicating threats. He was released a written promise to appear in court.

• Linda Douglas, 58, 770 Chris Drive; worthless checks; 2:20 p.m. Aug. 28.

• Kerry Grayling Wilson, 43, 217 Bacon St.; felony probtion violation; $4,000 bond; 2:45 p.m. Aug. 28.

• Avan Salinas Velderrama, 18, 501 Chrysler St.; vandalism (allegedly for spray painting unspecified buildings); $500 bond; 11 p.m. Aug. 28.

• On Aug. 22, Best Buy reported a 21-year-old man removed wrapping from a store  item and tried to hide the item.

• On Aug. 22, officers questioned a 35-year-old woman at an unspecified location about having ultracet in an unlabeled bottle.

• On Aug. 23, officers questioned two 18-year-olds and a 17-year-old at an unspecified location about underage drinking.

• On Aug. 23, David Price, 37, reported vandals spray painted the side of his vehicle.

• On Aug. 23, Palmer Ballard, 56, reported a 29-year-old man took Ballard’s automatic teller machine card without permission.

• On Aug. 23, officers questioned a 19-year-old male at an unspecified location about having marijuana and drug paraphernalia.

• On Aug. 23, Roderick Polk, 30, reported the theft of a firearm.

• On Aug. 24, Steven Artz, 31, reported a 25-year-old man broke a window at Artz’s home and stolen property.

• On Aug. 24, officers questioned a 17-year-old male at an unspecified location about possession of a plastic bong and other drug paraphernalia.

• On Aug. 24, officers learned that Debra Dixon, 29, previously reported missing, had been located.

• At 4:43 a.m. Aug. 25, Franky Perez, 26, and Paul Collins reported a break-in and the theft of money, four “long guns” and an Xbox 360.

• At 12:05 p.m. Aug. 25, Home Depot reported a 46-year-old woman tried to hide merchandise in her purse.

• At 3:37 p.m. Aug. 25, officers questioned a 24-year-old man at an unspecified location about having cocaine which he intended to sell.

• At 8:30 p.m. Aug. 25, Linda Haywood, 49, reported property stolen from her unlocked vehicle.

• At 9:14 p.m. Aug. 25, Hardees reported a 19-year-old male attempted to pay with counterfeit currency.

• At 10 p.m. Aug. 25, Christine Castor and Matthew Maione, both 21, reported a 22-year-old man fired a .12-gauge shotgun in the street in front of their home.

• At 10:44 a.m. Aug. 26, Casco Signs reported thieves cut a “gas filler neck” to steal gasoline.

• At 12:21 p.m. Aug. 26, Food Lion No. 755 reported a 37-year-old man hid merchandise and left the store.

• At 9:30 a.m. Aug. 26, police notified the Department of Social Services about a 38-year-old woman’s questionable treatment of a 16-year-old male.

• At 7:35 p.m. Aug. 26, Sue Burns, 39, reported a 16-year-old male took a tailgate without permission.

• At 7:51 p.m. Aug. 26, Leeann Wensil, 28, reported someone broke the window of her vehicle and took her pocketbook.

• At 7:55 p.m. Aug. 26, Joyce Aguilar-Flores, 51, reported someone shot a window in her home with a BB gun.

• At 10:34 a.m. Aug. 27, Jennifer Wike, 39, reported someone broke into her vehicle and stole property.

• At 10 a.m. Aug. 27, Bobby Brown, 69, reported a 19-year-old acquaintance removed the registration plate from Brown’s vehicle.

• At 10:02 a.m. Aug. 27, Judy Flores, 45, reported a 33-year-old acquaintance used Flores’ Social Security number without her permission.

• At 12:30 a.m. Aug. 28, officers investigated a report of someone passing a counterfeit $20 bill.

• At 8:48 p.m. Aug. 27, Lowe’s Food store no. 225 reported a 45-year-old woman took merchandise in the store and tried to return it for cash.

• At 8:53 a.m. Aug. 28, officers investigated a report that a 23-year-old man left a bruise on the forehead of a 4-week-old child.

• At 9:20 a.m. Aug. 28, Dale Andrews, 60, reported his vehicle taken from an unspecified parking lot without permission.

• At 3:40 p.m. Aug. 28, Vernie Rainey, 63, reported a 21-year-old woman took his debit card and used it in “various locations” in Kannapolis.

• At 4:30 p.m. Aug. 28, Dollar General store no. 10100 reported a 36-year-old woman bought items with a fraudulent check.

• At 2:51 p.m. Aug. 28, Food Lion no. 6 reported a 43-year-old man obtained property by false pretense from one store and then went to another store to exchange the items for cash.

• At 4 p.m. Aug. 28, officers questioned a 58-year-old man at an unspecified location about possession of drug paraphernalia.

• At 3:15 p.m. Aug. 28, Burke’s Outlet reported a 36-year-old woman bought items with a worthless check.

Thirty minutes earlier,  Food Lion no. 1284 reported the same woman and a 43-year-old man writing another worthless check.

• At 6:45 p.m. Aug. 28, Billy Richardson, 37, reported the theft of a gun, two guitars and a vacuum cleaner.

• At 10:24 p.m. Aug. 28, officers questioned a 25-year-old man about possessing a prescribed medicine “outside of the original container.”

• At 10:35 p.m. Aug. 28, Terrance Rucker, 22, reported several men, two of them 21 and the third 26, beat him.

• On Sept. 1, Cletus O. Hill, 27, 15901 U.S. 52, Gold Hill, reported a break-in, the theft of $12,700 in items from inside his home and a 2004 Yamaha all-terrain vehicle. Sgt. Tierney.

• On Sept. 1, David Isenhour, 45, 135 N. Main St., Richfield, reported a break-in to an outbuilding at 14259 U.S. 49 N., Gold Hill, since Aug. 27. Nothinig was taken, but a $200 window was broken. Deputy Kluttz.

• On Sept. 1, Eddie Baggs, 61, 3650 U.S. 601 S., Concord, reported someone took $2,500 in currency from his 2003 Suzuki Aerio and caused $600 in damage to the ‘03 Suzuki, a 2004 Suzuki and a 2004 between Aug. 30 and Sept. 1. Deputy Lisk.

• On Sept. 1, Annette Kemp Pirkle, 43, 6712 Hickory Ridge Road, Harrisburg, reported her husband, Gary, missing. Last contact was a text message at 11:20 p.m. Aug. 22. Deputy Joyner.

• On Sept. 1, Daniel Mark Sninchak, 35, 6061 Creekview Court, Harrisburg, reported someone cut the two, passenger-side tires on his 2006 Dodge Caravan, parked at his home, causing $200 damage. Deputy Staton.
