Habitat and Cannon School pair for photo exhibit
February 24, 2009
CONCORD — Cannon School Habitat for Humanity, in partnership with Habitat Cabarrus and Habitat for Humanity International, will host an exhibition of photographs of Habitat homeowners from around the world standing in front of their newly constructed houses.
An opening reception for the exhibit will be held on March 16 from 6 to 7 p.m. in Cannon School’s Upper School Commons, where the photographs will be displayed March 16-26 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Habitat for Humanity photographers captured the images during Habitat Global Village builds — short-term mission trips during which Habitat supporters from around the world joined with indigenous families in need to build simple and affordable houses using local materials. The exhibit showcases Habitat’s work in several countries, including the United States, Romania, Northern Ireland, the Philippines, India, Malawi, Ghana, Chile and Costa Rica.
“These photos are vivid examples of the power of individuals to make a difference in someone else’s life,” said Haley Acuff, faculty sponsor of Cannon School Habitat for Humanity.
“Habitat and its many volunteers are closing the door on poverty housing and homelessness. I hope these images encourage new supporters to join with us to help low-income families in our communities have decent, safe and affordable homes.”
Cannon School students started a campus Habitat for Humanity organization in 2007. In the two years since, student-volunteers have been active participants in the Habitat Cabarrus Youth United leadership program that helps eliminate substandard housing through advocacy, fundraising, and homebuilding.
They have raised funds and awareness for the Shack-A-Thon and Act! Speak! Build! Week initiatives, helped organize a disc golf tournament, and helped build homes for families in need.
Cannon School is an independent, nonsectarian, college preparatory institution serving more than 900 students in Junior Kindergarten through Grade 12. Cannon School is on a 65-acre campus on Poplar Tent Road near the Cabarrus/Mecklenburg county line.
The school is fully accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS).
