Snow Day

February 4, 2009

Last night, the TV weathermen mentioned we could get a dusting of snow. Most of us went to be and figured it would be no big deal.

But later on in the evening, snow began to coat the grass and the roofs of nearby houses.

I love snow at night. Everything shines with a blue hue.

I don’t like snow in the morning. Everything is slippery.

About 5 a.m., I got a phone call from Rowan-Salisbury Schools telling me they wouldn’t be open today. I popped open the laptop and made sure I posted it on SalisburyPost.com … then I looked outside.

The ground was coated with about two inches of snow. The road was covered, too, which meant my road to work would be rough. There are a lot of hills and twists and turns between my house and the Post.

While the little ones (and my wife) slept in, I whipped-up a batch of pancakes; Snow days are treats, after all.

Looking out of my back window, the sun peeked through the woods and cast an interesting shadow on the snow. It’s probably like this every day, but you really only notice the contrast when snow is on the ground.

I sat at the table for a while, drinking my coffee, eating my pancakes, checking my email and just gazing at the landscape out the window.

The little ones woke up.

“Snow!,” Abby screamed. I’ve never seen these kids get dressed so quickly.

They ate some beakfast and ran outside to play. Ben made some snowballs, Abby just wanted to run around.

So began the Snow Day.
